Weekend Preview - Week 1 (9/7)
by Scott Joerger, scottj@dyestat.com
Though there was some action in various sections throughout California last weekend, this weekend marks the first weekend competition is allowed in all sections state-wide. Several big meets are on our radar and should be on yours as well: Great Cow Run (SS) - Five top-25 teams are featured in the Great Cow Run, including top-10 teams Brea Olinda, Long Beach Poly, and Redondo Union. This one could shake up the rankings! Also look for a big individual battle between Century League Rivals Austin Tamagno and Sydney Gidabuday. On the girls side, we'll get our first look at #19 South Torrance and their star front runner Kimberly Coscia. DyeStatCAL will be on-site with full video coverage. Bronco Roundup (SDS) - Bronco Roundup will feature top girls teams La Costa Canyon, Rancho Buena Vista, and host Rancho Bernardo. The boys race will feature a closely matched Rancho Buena Vista and Torrey Pines squads, ranked #15 and #17 respectively. Saugus Showdown (SS) - Perhaps the most anticipated meet this weekend, girls super teams Saugus, Great Oak, Bonita, and JSerra will square in a rare early season meeting. Individually, look for a close matchup between Saugus's Samantha Ortega and Great Oak's Destiny Collins. Not to be overshadowed, the boys race also pits some of California's top teams against each other, with #22 Saugus facing #25 Great Oak. DyeStatCAL will be on-site. Earlybird Invitational (CCS) - Up in the CCS, several of Northern California's best will meet at Toro Park in Salinas. In boy's racing, look for Carlmont and Bellarmine Prep to challenge the central valley's Madera South, which appear VERY TOUGH coming off their home opener last weekend. On the girls side, Aptos is the top ranked team at #22, lead by star Clare Peabody. Expect San Lorenzo Valley (which just missed our top 50) to challenge, with super star Anna Maxell possibly taking a run at the Toro course record. Seaside Invitational (SS) - Seaside Invitational features boys #11 St. John Bosco leading five top-50 boys teams in this scorcher by the sea. In girls racing, #14 Trabuco Hills is the top ranked team in attendance, wiith challengers Moorpark and West Ranch ready to make a statement. DyeStatCAL will be on-site with full video coverage.
In-season rankings start next week, which will feature a weekly top 25 and a weekly top 10 by division. The weekly publication will come out on Wednesdays, so be on the lookout! Below is a list of where the top 25 ranked teams are competing this week. If I missed anyone, please let me know and direct me to your schedule.
