No. 5 Orange Win 14th Regional Title In Last 17 Meets; Boston College Women Secure First Regional Title

Syracuse men won the NCAA Northeast Regional in cross-country Friday for the 14th time in 17 meets, placing five among the top nine to score 32 points at Hopkinton, N.H.

No. 5 Syracuse placed runners 2-6-7-8-9.

Unranked Iona claimed the second automatic berth for nationals, edging No. 22 Harvard 95-105. Harvard can reach NCAAs via at-large selection, which will be announced Saturday Nov. 15.

Fredrick Kipkosgei of Hofstra won the 10,000-meter race in 29:12.7, followed by Syracuse’s Peter Walsdorf in 29:17.5. For the Orange, Benne Anderson, Matthew Meill, Assaf Harari and Sam Lawler claimed sixth through ninth.

Harvard’s Sam Burgess was third in 29:18.6.

Through four runners, Harvard led Iona 42-64. Iona’s No. 5 runner, Baptiste Cartieux, was 31st to secure the runner-up team spot.

In the women’s race, Boston College earned its first regional championship, beating Providence 60-71.

Army’s Charlotte Richman won the 6,000-meter race in 19:52.8, followed by Boston College’s Imogen Gardiner in 19:53.8. Molly Malague of Harvard was third in 19:54.6.

Providence, ranked as high as No. 7 this year, placed three in the top 10 but lost to B.C.’s better depth.  Army was third with 91 points.
